Gay and Lesbian Parade in Sydney! Mardi Gras 2009 ...
A great annual show took place in Sydney in the 7nd of March 2009. The biggest such festival in the world. This time there were about 6,000 participates. From many countries gather lesbians and gays to celebrate their freedom which wasn’t so easy.
It took a long way for gays and lesbians to have their right in choosing the sexual orientation. The very first Mardi Grass (Shrove Tuesday) came over on the 24th of June, 1974. The lesbian and gay decided to go on the street with a protest but their march was suppressed by police, in spite the march was official with a permission to do so. Many people were arrested and the other day their names appeared in press, lots of them lost their jobs and friends as society considered homosexuality is a crime and really wrong thing.
The next year the march repeated again under the name Sydney Gay Mardi Gras, and in only 1988 the parade took name of Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
For those who suffered a lot from society rejection for a long time, who had to hid their sexual orientation and tried to be the way all others, for them Mardi Gras is a special event. And as to any special occasion we do something special they also decided to make a Mardi Gras Carnival as special and unlike to any others as possible. They decided to make unbelievable costumes, striking make up, provoking platforms.
Every year a Chief of Mardi Gras Parade is chosen. Of cause the chives are gays and some get opened to the public about their sexual orientation only after becoming the chives. In 2007 it was a film star Rupert Everett, in 2008 an American comedian Margaret Cho, in 2009 an Australian Olympic medalist.
The parade starts in the evening from the Oxford Street sown to Flinders St to Buslane.
The annual Mardi Gras March like a proof or throw down a challenge to the whole world, like a shrill scream that we are gays and lesbians are people, we are free to show our prefers and likes and we welcome anyone to join our everyday growing community.
